I’ve quilted forever, making my first quilt when I was in grade 11. Techniques, tools and fabrics have certainly changed! I become seriously obsessed with quilting after joining the Prairie Hearts Quilt Guild in 1990.
Qualified with a Bachelor of Education degree majoring in Home Economics, I taught Home Ec in Moose Jaw at 4 different schools during my 30-year career. While I was still teaching, Shelley Wicks and I opened “The Quilt Patch” in 2002. That was certainly a hectic time, with two full-time jobs! While there, I learned many techniques when making store samples, and taught many classes. I have recently sold my shares in the business and “retired”, leaving me time to expand my teaching career. I have taught quilting in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Nova Scotia.
Several years ago, Marni MacDonald and I made one-of-a-kind quilted and embellished jackets. Between us, we sold over 300! As a result, I feel very confident in teaching fabric manipulation and embellishment techniques in clothing. I’m also experienced in paper piecing with a special interest in New York Beauty quilts. Lately, the concepts of circles and art quilts have captured my interest.
Since 1990, I have taken many quilting classes – some from well-known people, such as Joen Wolfum, Sherrill Kahn and Lorraine Stangness. I have taken advantage of the expertise in Moose Jaw, as well. There’s always something to learn in a class: often a new technique or idea, or just the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts!
My quilts have been exhibited and sold in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Quilt Canada, winning many awards and selling enough to encourage me to continue. I’m proud to have been owner of a store which was featured in Quilt Sampler magazine – Fall, 2006. I’m thrilled to have a quilt in Quilters Home Magazine – Mar/Apr, 2009.
